Reducing blood draw phobia in an adult with autism spectrum disorder using low‐cost virtual reality exposure therapy

Abstract: Background Needle phobias are common in children and adults worldwide. One effective intervention for this phobia is exposure therapy where a participant is gradually exposed to increasing levels of the fear‐evoking stimulus while differential reinforcement is applied. This intervention, however, may be difficult to implement with some medical procedures as it may be difficult to obtain unfettered access to medical facilities and equipment for the purposes of exposure. Virtual reality may overcome these obstac… Show more

“…Current evidence suggests efficacy for technologies such as hand-held video games [ 5 ], tablet computers [ 6 ], immersive 360 videos [ 7 ], and interactive VR games [ 8 ]. VR technology has been explicitly explored as an anxiety management intervention in the context of vaccination [ 9 ] and acute procedures such as laceration repair and wound care [ 10 ]. With recent advances in commercial VR Head-Mounted Display (HMD) devices (eg, Oculus Quest by Oculus VR), the availability of this technology has dramatically increased.…”

“…Fluctuating numbers reflect variable trends in technology and business (Lang, 2020) A full list of the number of participants in each paper is given in Table 1. It ranges from case studies with only 1 participant (De Luca et al, 2019;Meindl et al, 2019) to larger studies of 51 (Parsons & Carlew, 2016) and 30 (Didehbani et al, 2016). Ghanovuni et al's (2018 paper assessed parents of children with ASD and clinicians rather than autistic individuals themselves.…”

“…Speci cally, nine of these studies (e.g., Burket et al, 2018;Genova et al, 2021; targeted job interview skills and one targeted general vocational skills (i.e., Bozgeyikil et at., 2017). Of the functional behaviors targeted, 29.17% (n = 7) of the studies focused on the treatment of problem behavior, such as the treatment of fears, phobias (e.g., Maskey et al, 2014;Maskey et al, 2019a;Meindl et al, 2019), or hypersensitivity (i.e., Johnston et al, 2020). Four (16.67%) studies focused on safety related skills, such as pedestrian safety (i.e., Dixon et al, 2019), driving skills (i.e., Cox et al, 2017;Wade et al, 2016), andtransportation use (i.e., Miller et al, 2020;Simões et al, 2018).…”
