Reducing Anxiety and Social Stress in Primary Education: A Breath-Focused Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Intervention

Abstract: Primary school students suffer from high levels of anxiety and stress. Having emotional regulation abilities can help them to manage challenging emotional situations. “…The iPods were rotated daily through each classroom, giving students an equal opportunity to witness changes in HRV as they practiced. It provides a total HRV of 100 points visually distributed by bars between low (red/incoherent), medium (blue), or high (green/coherent) HRV, as well as a coherence score, with higher scores reflecting greater (and healthier) HRV (Aranberri-Ruiz et al, 2022). Although this HRV biofeedback was used during practice with students, it was not collecting data on HRV throughout practice time.…”

“…A parasympathetic reaction occurs when safety is perceived, whereas a sympathetic reaction occurs in response to perceptions that safety is at risk (c.f. Aranberri-Ruiz et al, 2022). The ANS, and particularly the vagus nerve, is essential to the development of emotional experience as well as the ability to self-regulate emotions and social behavior (McCraty, 2015).…”
