Reduced mutual coupling in a compact antenna array using periodic structures

Abstract: We investigate the reduction of mutual coupling between the radiating elements of a compact antenna array using a periodic structure. The periodic structure is designed such that it exhibits an electromagnetic bandgap for in-plane transmission over a specified frequency band around the operational frequency of 2.40 GHz. The experimental setup consists of a two-element dipole antenna array. For a spatial separation of /6, significant improvement of the radiation efficiency was observed

“…By comparison with the results reported in recent literature [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24], it is concluded that the three most important merits of the DGS decoupler are the small occupied PCB area, the width of the stopband (bandgap), and the resulting active impedance bandwidth. A secondary advantage is the adjustable depth of resonance, which is controlled by balancing distributed inductance and capacitance.…”

All three techniques require that the structure of the array be modified.…”

“…However, when several antennas come out in close proximity, they suffered from strong mutual coupling, which results in lower efficiency of the antenna and loss of bandwidth that further degrades the performance of either the diversity gain or the spatial multiplexing schemes. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Both the performances of the linear and the circular polarization (CP) antenna could be degraded by the mutual coupling. For example, in the GPS anti-jam systems, the antenna array is applied to counteract the spatial jamming.…”
