Reduced levels of γ-crystallin transcripts during embryonic development of murine Cat2 nop mutant lenses

Abstract: The reduced level of gamma-crystallin transcripts is the first alteration observable during the embryonic development of the Cat2 mutant lenses: it precedes the morphological changes. This result represents an additional line of argument that the gamma-crystallin genes may be the target of the mutation in the Cat2 mice.

“…The eye lens obsolescence allele (Cryge Cat2-Elo ) mutant phenotype is caused by a single basepair deletion in exon 3 of the ␥-E-crystallin gene (Cartier et al, 1992). Other Cryge Cat alleles also demonstrate decreased production of ␥-crystallins (Santhiya et al, 1995;Klopp et al, 1998).…”

“…The result of these mutations shows some morphological similarities with the case presented. For example, a mutation designated Cat2 nop shows swelling of lens fibres with later progressive degeneration of the lens core [13]. Rupture of the posterior capsule in association with epithelial and lens fibre cell swelling has been observed in Cat2t mutants [7].…”
