Rediscovery and new data on distribution of the imperfectly known Philippine endemic Etlingera pubimarginata (Zingiberaceae; Alpinieae)

Abstract: Recent exploration on the mountains of Northern Mindanao, Philippines resulted in the recollection of Etlingera pubimarginata, an enigmatic endemic species recollected after a lapse of over a century. An amended taxonomic description with colour photographs as well as comparative morphology to its allied species, geographical distribution, and conservation status are provided.

“…This species was formerly known as Amomum pubimarginatum Elmer until this species was transferred to Etlingera by Poulsen & Docot (2018) on the bases of morphological characters that resemble some Etlingera species found in Sulawesi (Poulsen, 2012). This species is distinct from other Philippine Etlingera species by having coriaceous, sharply pointed, stiff bracts and its fruits are subglobose to ovoid, densely covered with golden brown hairs (Naive et al, 2019). Aside from its type locality in Mt.…”

“…Aside from its type locality in Mt. Apo (Davao del Sur) (Elmer, 1915), some populations of E. pubimarginata were also reported in Claveria (Misamis Oriental) (Naive et al, 2019), Marilog District in Davao (Acma et al, 2020), and Cinchona Forest Reserve in Bukidnon (Jayme et al, 2020). For over a century since its first collection, no laboratory studies on this species were conducted.…”

“…The measurement and description of the species were based on the examinations of photographic images of plants in situ, live specimens, and specimens deposited at the University of Santo Tomas Herbarium (USTH). The style of description follows the recent work of Naive et al (2019), with general plant descriptive terminology following Beentje (2016). Since there are no species-level revisions of the whole family, all type specimens of Amomum, Etlingera and Hornstedtia spp.…”

“…pubescens by Ridley (1908) based on Elmer's specimens collected from Cuernos de Negros Mountains, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental. Elmer (1919) and Merrill (1923) recognized it at species rank then transferred it to Hornstedtia and Amomum, respectively. Until now, only a 21-words long description of Etlingera pilosa was provided in the protologue with limited accompanied information.…”

“…Our knowledge of the Zingiberaceae of the Philippines has been updated as a result of recent botanical explorations focused on the collection of gingers (e.g. Naive, 2017;Ambida et al, 2018;Poulsen & Docot, 2018;Acma et al, 2019;Docot et al, 2019a, b). Ridley (1905) enumerated 19 species of Philippine Zingiberaceae but now 122 species are known, of which 68% are endemic (Pelser et al, 2011 onwards;Zingiberaceae Resource Centre, 2019).…”
