Rediscovering Rural Territories by Means of Religious Route Planning

Abstract: Since ancient times, pilgrimages have been an important expression of faith because slow-paced traveling, physical effort, and a closer relationship with nature favor introspection. Protecting pilgrimage routes means transforming them into a medium to rediscover and guide landscape development while avoiding possible speculative drifts. Such an approach is particularly important in rural areas often relegated to a marginal role in planning strategies, but frequently traversed by these itineraries. This paper d… Show more

“…The attractiveness of the trail is related to the trail infrastructure, e.g., restroom facilities fountains, shelters, signage, etc., constructed in the proximity of the trail [40]. These facilities can positively impact user preference by enhancing the visual and physical experience for the user [41]. In addition, urban landscapes are known to increase the visibility of the natural landscape, such as plants, mountains, and rivers, as well as that of the artificial landscape, which can have a negative effect on preferences [24,42].…”

“…Suggested proposal of a hiking trail in the forest in surroundings of the Deserted Castle has closest to the conception of cultural trails including trails such as trade routes, religious routes/pilgrim trails, literary trails and food and wine routes (Timothy and Boyd, 2015). Existing trails and their related landscape elements (both natural and human-made features including those with religious or heritage value) represent the basic components of a potential greenway which, however, remains inactive if its elements are not properly interlinked (Balestrieri and Congiu, 2017).…”

“…In general, greenways are appreciated for the preservation of important open spaces with natural features (e.g., trees and water bodies) and to provide opportunities to exercise, relax, and appreciate nature [19,23]. Based on the investigation of user perception and preferences, researchers have concluded many detailed factors that could influence greenway uses, such as attractiveness, accessibility, visibility, water bodies, proximity, trail surface, cleanliness, safety, lighting, drinking water, and restroom facilities [21,23,27]. However, crowded, neglected, unsafe, or poorly maintained greenways could also result in a decline in use or complete avoidance by users [22,28].…”
