Rediscovering fire: Small interventions, large effects.

Abstract: Unexpected findings are often the spark for new discoveries and theories. A puzzle emerged from a series of unanticipated findings over 3 decades, indicating that for problem drinkers (a) relatively brief interventions can trigger significant change, (b) increasing the intensity of treatment does not consistently improve outcome, (c) therapist empathy can be a potent predictor of client change, and (d) a single empathic counseling session can substantially enhance the outcome of subsequent treatment. These phe… Show more

“…Ethical standards dictate the delivery of a behavioral treatment that at least meets minimal standards of care for patients on placebo or medications of unknown efficacy (Freedman, 1987;Levine, 1985;Miller, 2000a;Miller and Brody, 2002a). However, achieving this level of care does not necessarily require intensive behavioral treatment, as there is a large literature documenting the efficacy of brief and minimal treatments, particularly for substance abusers with less severe conditions (Babor, 1994;Miller, 2000b;Wilk et al, 1997).…”

“…This paper will build upon previous research by assessing the association between communication and parents' perceptions of satisfaction/quality in a national sample of families identified in primary care settings with psychosocial concerns. Given supporting theory [29][30][31] and existing empirical evidence, [25] it was hypothesized that most parents would feel positively about their child's provider, and that practitioners' increased use of empathy, concern, and collaboration would be associated with higher ratings of satisfaction and quality of care.…”

“…Change in social networks may positively influence adolescents' health behaviors, leading them to seek health care more quickly than they might otherwise [119,120,121,76]. There is also substantial evidence that brief interventions (BIs) can have a significant impact on problem drinking [122,140,86,48,123,140]. These BIs are control initiatives such as taxation, limiting access, and drinking and driving laws.…”
