Remote sensing is proposed as a useful technique for monitoring landfill sites for gas migration. Landfill gas has the potential to migrate from the site boundaries and cause damage. It is also spatially and temporally very difficult to monitor. The presence of landfill gas in the root zone causes signs of stress to be visible within the vegetation, the stress generally taking the form of chlorosis or dieback. This, in turn, may result in a change in spectral response of the vegetation. Airborne thematic map data and low cost video imagery are proposed as techniques to obtain imagery in order to classify sites according to vegetation stress. A comparison between the efficiency and costs of the two sources of imagery is made. Two case studies are summarized and the economics of the methodology discussed. It is recommended that remote sensing is used in conjunction with soil and geological maps to identify areas of high landfill gas concentration and that this is combined with traditional field measurements to gain a better spatial and temporal understanding of gas migration.

La quantitat de residus de construcció i demolició (RCD) generats a la Unió Europea (UE) supera els 860 milions de tones anuals i representa un terç del total de residus generats. En alguns països membres, com Espanya, aquesta xifra se situa al voltant de 26 milions de tones, de les quals el 35% s'aboquen directament en dipòsits controlats d'inerts i el 65% restant es classifica i processa a les plantes de tractament. Aquestes instal•lacions generen àrids reciclats que actualment no tenen cabuda al mercat pel baix èxit comercial.En aquest estudi es planteja l'ús d'aquest tipus d'àrids a les fases de construcció, explotació i clausura dels dipòsits controlats de residus sòlids. Per tal d'aconseguir-ho s'ha creat LABWASTE.2020, una ferramenta de càlcul que estima per mitjà de relacions matemàtiques les quantitats d'àrids necessaris als diferents sectors d'un dipòsit controlat. Els resultats obtinguts permeten, per una banda, estimar la demanda d'àrids i determinar les quantitats que podrien ser reemplaçades per àrids reciclats; i per l'altra, obtindre una anàlisi comparatiu dels costos de compra i transport considerant diversos proveïdors. Així doncs, es podria triar l'opció més sostenible econòmicament i ambiental de manera que seria possible reduir tant l'impacte ambiental de la instal•lació com el cost econòmic.
