“…The report here of M. tecta in Peruvian waters adds a new occurrence location for the species in the south‐east Pacific. Photographic evidence also suggests its presence in Chilean waters (Nyegaard et al ., 2018a), but no other records of M. tecta have been reported north of 11° S (this study) in the south‐east Pacific Ocean, not even in the Galapagos Islands where a recent genetic study revealed the prevalence of M. ramsayi (Thys et al ., ), which, based on key morphological characters observed, corresponds to the recently redescribed M. alexandrini (Sawai et al ., ). The limited distribution of M. tecta , mainly in southern Peru waters reported here, supports the idea that they are probably distributed in temperate waters (Nyegaard et al ., 2018a,b).…”

“…The physical similarities between all three Mola species have led to the misidentification of M. tecta and M. alexandrini as M. mola (Nyegaard et al ., ; Sawai et al ., ; Thys et al ., ). Mola mola has been reported in Peruvian waters (Chirichigno & Cornejo, ) and a specimen of the species is exhibited in the Museum of Natural History of Lima and it was assumed that this was the only species of Mola present in the area.…”

“…Despite their strange appearance and unique shape, which stimulated scientific interest since the 16th century (Rondelet 1554), little attention has been paid to ocean sunfishes and their abundance among fisheries. Recently, a growing interest in their taxonomy led to the reinstatement of a senior synonym of Mola ramsayi (Giglioli, 1883) (see Sawai et al 2017) and the description of a new species of Mola (see Nyegaard et al 2017). In parallel, reports of the extent of ocean sunfish bycatch have been given by Nyegaard et al (2017).…”
