Redescription of Lindia gravitata with comments on L. tecusa (Rotifera: Monogononta: Lindiidae)

Abstract: Lindia gravitata, previously considered a synonym of L. tecusa by several authors is redescribed. Body shape and trophi structure show that both species are closely related, and unequivocally di¡erentiated by e.g. toe shape, number of sensory papillae, and shape of subunci and epipharynx. Other related, but insu⁄ciently described congeners are listed. The diagnostic features of the subgenus Halolindia are discussed.

“…Notommata glyphura is characterized by a virgate (sucking) mastax with dorsally arched rami and one major and several accessory uncus teeth whose presence is indicated in SEM preparations by oblique jugal lines dorsal to the major uncus tooth (see also Sørensen 2002). The jaws of L. tecusa bear an uncus plate with the individual teeth tightly bound together and acting as a functional unit (De Smet 2005). Itura myersi (see Pourriot 1997) is a borderline case; there is only one uncus shaft from which distally two teeth project.…”

“…8: apomorphy box 1). Dorso‐ventrally flattened rami are present in the outgroup representatives L. tecusa (see De Smet 2005) and I. myersi (see Pourriot 1997) as well, but the jaw apparatus cannot be extruded in these taxa. Dorso‐ventrally flattened rami are also present in members of the planktonic genus Asplanchna , where they can be thrust out of the mouth opening to capture prey (Koste 1978; Walsh et al.…”
