Redescription ofGeogarypus minor, type species of the genusGeogarypus, and description of a new species from Italy (Pseudoscorpiones: Geogarypidae)

Abstract: The type species of the pseudoscorpion genus Geogarypus Chamberlin, 1930, Geogarypus minor (L. Koch, 1873), is redescribed from the newly designated female lectotype and numerous specimens from southern France, Corsica and Italy. Geogarypus nigrimanus (Simon, 1879) is newly designated as a junior subjective synonym of G. minor, and a new species, G. italicus sp. nov. (type locality Bergeggi, Western Liguria, Italy), is described from specimens from mainland Italy, Sicily and Sardinia. A key to the Mediterraneo… Show more

“…The COI sequences of the specimens belonging to Geogarypus minor are identical to each other and to the sequence of Geogarypus nigrimanus (JN018180 specimen voucher MNHN-JAB62). The species Geogarypus nigrimanus has been recently synonymized with Geogarypus minor [37]. Regarding the produced COI sequences of the specimens belonging to Chthonius ischnocheles species, the specimens IV3-1, Q3-1, IV1-1 and Q4 are between 99.8-100% identical and match the sequence of Chthonius ischnocheles available at the NCBI database (JN018172 specimen voucher MNHN-JAB62).…”

“…The global genus Geogarypus currently has 48 extant species and three fossil species and is abundant in the tropics and subtropics (Harvey 2013;Novák and Harvey 2018). Currently only ten species are reported for continental South America and adjacent islands (Harvey 2013;Nassirkhani 2014;Neethling and Haddad 2017;Gardini et al 2017;Novák and Harvey 2018). Of these species, four are known to occur in Brazil: G. amazonicus Mahnert, 1979, G. cuyabanus (Balzan, 1887, G. formosus (Mello-Leitão 1937), G. paraguayanus Beier, 1931(Beier 1931, 1955, 1959Mello-Leitão 1937;Mahnert 1979;Harvey 2013).…”

“…Most species of Geogarypus Chamberlin, 1930 (Geogarypidae) have eight trichobothria on the fixed finger (e.g. Beier 1932b;Harvey 1986Harvey , 2000Neethling and Haddad 2016;Gardini et al 2017;Novák and Harvey 2018) but two species have only seven trichobothria in which isb is absent (Harvey 1986(Harvey , 1987b. The genus Larca (Larcidae) includes species with two, three or four trichobothria on the movable finger (e.g.…”
