Redescription and new records ofCeltodoryx ciocalyptoides(Demospongiae: Poecilosclerida)—a sponge invader in the north east Atlantic Ocean of Asian origin?

Abstract: In 1996 a sponge was found in a well studied area in the Ria of Etel, Brittany, France, that had never been recorded there before. This sponge was later described as a new species and genus,Celtodoryx girardaeby Perezet al.(2006), who concluded that it is probably an invasive species. Over several yearsC. girardaewas found to occur successively in the Gulf of Morbihan, France, and Oosterschelde estuary, Netherlands. This sponge is characterized by an extensive spatial broading and therewith it rates today amon… Show more

“…Only few sponges introduced to foreign habitats have been reported up to now (Calcinai et al 2004 ; Pérez et al 2006 ; Longo et al 2007 ; Van Soest et al 2007 ; Avila and Carballo 2009 ; Henkel and Janussen 2011 ) and none of them have been studied genetically at large geographical scales. The calcareous sponge Paraleucilla magna Klautau, Monteiro, and Borojevic 2004 is the first known alien sponge established in native Mediterranean assemblages (Longo et al 2004 , 2007 ) and emerges as an exceptional model for studying the invasive capacities of introduced, sessile marine species with poor natural dispersal capacity.…”

“…Le vecteur d'introduction invoqué est le naissain de l'huître Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793) importé pour l'ostréi-culture depuis la décennie 1990 à la fois dans le golfe du Morbihan et dans l'Oosterschelde. Henkel & Janussen (2011) montrent que Celtodoryx girardae est un synonyme plus récent de Celtodoryx ciocalyptoides (Burton, 1935). En accord avec van Soest et al (2007), Henkel & Janussen pensent que l'espèce a probablement été introduite depuis son aire d'origine, le Pacifique nord-ouest (mer du Japon, mer Jaune) dans l'Atlantique small population in the port of Le Havre has been found in 2014 at the rocky shore of a tidal dock, between + 1 m and -4.8 m. The three European populations (Le Havre, South Brittany and Oosterschelde) and the Pacific population all developed in a paralic environment, defined as a transition zone between marine and continental systems.…”
