“…5 and following). We used the recent intermediate redshift sample , the classic high redshift sample of Damjanov et al (2009), the new high redshift sample of Belli et al (2014), and the catalogue of van de , which contains a composition of various high redshift samples, such as Bezanson et al (2013), van Dokkum et al (2009), Onodera et al (2012, Cappellari et al (2009), Newman et al (2010, van der Wel et al (2008), Blakeslee et al (2006), Toft et al (2012), and their own work. We cannot perform a comparison with these datasets in every figure, because sometimes some samples do not contain the required parameters.…”

“…Based on the previous observation of quiescent high-redshift galaxies (Kriek et al 2006, van Dokkum et al (2008) found that there are already fully formed early-type galaxies with scale radii that are much smaller and stellar masses that are much higher than any object known in the local universe. For comparison, we used several samples of these galaxies at high redshifts, such as those of Damjanov et al (2009, and Belli et al (2014), and also at intermediate redshifts as in Zahid et al (2015). Many of these galaxies must have evolved, most likely by mergers, into more regular early-type galaxies.…”

“…This leads to an inside-out quenching process into a compact, passive "red nugget", the likely progenitor of the centre of an early-type galaxy today. The observational basis for this picture is becoming solid, both for the red-nugget phenomenon (Trujillo et al 2006a,b;van Dokkum et al 2008;Damjanov et al 2009Damjanov et al , 2011Newman et al 2010;Bruce et al 2012;Whitaker et al 2012;van Dokkum et al 2014) and for their potential bluenugget progenitors (Barro et al 2013(Barro et al , 2014aBruce et al 2014;Nelson et al 2014;Williams et al 2014;Tacchella et al 2015a). The theory, partly based on the same simulations that we analyse here, is also becoming robust (Dekel & Burkert 2014;Tacchella et al 2015b,c;Zolotov et al 2015).…”
