Red-luminescent biphosphine stabilized ‘Cu12S6’ cluster molecules

Abstract: The synthesis, molecular structures and luminescence properties of two 'Cu12S6' cluster molecules with stabilizing bidentate phosphine ligands are described. Both display in the solid state at ambient temperature high photoluminescence quantum yields (≥48%) and good stability towards oxygen.

“…Crystals of [(iPr 2 -bimy) 6 Cu 10 S 8 Hg 3 ] 6 have ab road emission at about 800 nm;t his can be contrasted with the recent reports by Eichhçfer and co-workers on the luminescentp roperties of similarly sized [Cu 12 S 6 (L\ L)] clusters (L\ L = bidentate phosphine ligand), with strong, sharpe missions being observed at about 700 nm. [14] Crystals of 6 are stable under an inert atmos- phere at room temperature;h owever,i ns olution the clusters decompose quickly,a se videnced by the formationo fablackcolored suspension in the reaction solution. Although crystals of 6 are unstable in solution, 1 Ha nd 13 C{ 1 H} NMR spectra can be obtained by dissolvingt he crystals in cold CDCl 3 (À30 8C; NMR spectra of 6 display only one set of resonances for the ligated carbenes.…”
