Red Grape Polyphenol Oral Administration Improves Immune Response in Women Affected by Nickel-Mediated Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Abstract: Background: Our previous findings demonstrated that in vitro supplementation of polyphenols, extracted from seeds of red grape (Nero di Troia cultivar), to peripheral lymphomonocytes from patients affected by allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to nickel (Ni) could reduce release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide (NO), while increasing levels of interleukin (IL)-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine. Objective: To assess whether an intervention with oral administration of polyphenols leads to a redu… Show more

“…Nine clinical trials examined the effects of various forms of herbal products, such as fresh herbs, creams, capsules, solutions, emulsions, injections, and soaps on CD. Among them, 5 studies evaluated the therapeutic measures ( 10 , 15 , 18 , 21 , 22 ) and 4 studies evaluated the preventive measures on CD ( 16 , 17 , 19 , 20 ).…”

“…In 5 studies, eligible participants were allocated into two groups (intervention and control) ( 10 , 15 , 18 , 21 , 22 ) whereas in 4 studies, the intervention and control were used in two different areas of the same body ( 16 , 17 , 19 , 20 ).…”

“…Polyphenols extracted from seeds of red grape (Nero di Troia cultivar), when in vitro incubated with peripheral blood lymphomonocytes from patients with Ni-mediated CAD, reduced release of NO, IL-17 and IFN-, while enhancing IL-10 production, thus, exerting anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities [51]. In a clinical trial, oral administration of Nero di Troia red grape polyphenols to patients with Ni-mediated CAD confirmed in vitro experiments in that they decreased serum levels of IFN-, IL-4, IL-17, NO and pentraxin 3, while levels of IL-10 were augmented [212]. This nutraceutical regimen led to an amelioration of CAD cutaneous manifestations.…”
