Red-emission over a wide range of wavelengths at various temperatures from tetragonal BaCN2:Eu2+

Abstract: A new tetragonal BaCN2 polymorph was obtained via a simple nitridation reaction of BaCO2, and the Eu doped product showed a red emission with an extremely wide range of red-shift of the emission wavelength with decreasing temperature.

“…For instance, AECN 2 (AE = Mg, Sr, Ca) can be prepared from melamine (C 3 N 6 H 6 ) and metal nitrides (Mg 3 N 2 , Sr 2 N, Ba 3 N 2 ) at temperatures between 740 and 850 • C under argon atmosphere [7]. SrCN 2 , BaCN 2 and CaCN 2 can also be obtained from the reaction of their corresponding carbonates under an ammonia flow at high temperatures [3,5,15]. Additionally, solid-state metathesis reactions have also resulted in the formation of SrCN 2 from SrI 2 and ZnCN 2 between 570 and 700 • C for 24 h or CaCN 2 from and Li 2 (CN 2 ) at 500 • C for 48 h [6,16].…”

“…Over the past decade, concerted efforts have been in progress for the development of new materials with good performance what can lead to a significant decrease of the manufacturing cost. In this context, alkaline-earth carbodiimides materials received a lot of attention recently for their potential application as hosts for luminescent materials, especially for red phosphors [3,4,5,6]. Several [5,7,8].…”

“…As part of the family of nitrogenous materials, alkaline-earth (AE) carbodiimides compounds with the general formula AECN2 (AE = Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba) have received increasing attention due to their interesting luminescent properties [9][10][11][12]. The most famous member of the family is surely CaCN2 used as fertilizer since early 20 th century.…”

“…[26][27][28] Because the 5d-4f transition emission of Eu 2+ is closely related to the coordination environment of host; hence, the modifications of crystal field strength, symmetry, covalency, and polarizability of activator-ligand bonds in Eu 2+ -activated phosphors have been widely concerned to optimize phosphor materials for the lighting requirements. [29][30][31][32][33][34][35] In various luminescence regulation strategies, cation substitutions have been widely considered to modify host lattice for achieving highly efficient luminescence materials. [35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42] In this work, we synthesized a series of Ce 3+ /P 5+ -codoped Ba 3 Si 6 O 12 N 2 :Eu 2+ green phosphor by a high-temperature solid state reaction.…”
