Background:The prevalence of metabolism-related fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been rarely reported in hospital staffs. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors for MAFLD in hospital staffs aged ≥18 years. Methods: Based on type B ultrasonic, hospital staffs who underwent medical examinations at the second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University from January 2022 to March 2022 were classified into health control group (661 subjects) and MAFLD group (223 subjects), demographic, biochemical and blood examination information were compared between 2 groups. Independent risk factors for MAFLD were determined by logistic regression. Predictive values of risk factors of MAFLD were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: The prevalence of MAFLD was 33.7%. Older age (OR=1.08, p<0.001), H. pylori infection (OR=0.234, p=0.02), triglycerideglucose (TyG) (OR=7.001, p<0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (OR=2.076, p=0.028), red blood cell (RBC) (OR=2.386, p=0.001), eating out (OR=0.048, p=0.001), regular exercise (OR=23.017, p<0.001), and overweight (OR=3.891, p=0.003) were independently associated factors for MAFLD. The AUC of model predicting MAFLD is 0.910 [95% CI (0.886, 0.934)], with 0.794 sensitivity, 0.908 specificity. The diagnostic value of model was higher in the female MAFLD group after stratified analysis according to gender. The model showed that TyG was the factor contributing more to MAFLD. The diagnostic value of TyG was higher in the female MAFLD group than male MAFLD group. Conclusion:The prevalence of MAFLD among hospital staffs was 33.7%. TyG can be used to predict MAFLD especially for female hospital staffs for early intervention.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease and affects about 25% of the population globally. NAFLD has the potential to cause significant liver damage in many patients because it can progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis, which substantially increases disease morbidity and mortality. Despite the key role of innate immunity in the disease progression, the underlying molecular and pathogenic mechanisms remain to be elucidated. RNase L is a key enzyme in interferon action against viral infection and displays pleiotropic biological functions such as control of cell proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy. Recent studies have demonstrated that RNase L is involved in innate immunity. In this study, we revealed that RNase L contributed to the development of NAFLD, which further progressed to NASH in a time‐dependent fashion after RNase L wild‐type (WT) and knockout mice were fed with a high‐fat and high‐cholesterol diet. RNase L WT mice showed significantly more severe NASH, evidenced by widespread macro‐vesicular steatosis, hepatocyte ballooning degeneration, inflammation, and fibrosis, although physiological and biochemical data indicated that both types of mice developed obesity, hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, dysfunction of the liver, and systemic inflammation at different extents. Further investigation demonstrated that RNase L was responsible for the expression of some key genes in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and fibrosis signaling. Taken together, our results suggest that a novel therapeutic intervention for NAFLD may be developed based on regulating the expression and activity of RNase L.

Background and objectives Available data regarding cardiomyopathy in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC) are very limited because it often requires multidisciplinary assessments. The study aims to evaluate the prevalence of alcoholic cardiomyopathy in ALC and their clinical correlations. Methods Adult ALC patients without a previous diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases between January 2010 and December 2019 were included in the study. The prevalence rate of alcoholic cardiomyopathy in patients with ALC was calculated together with a 95% confidence interval (CI) using the Clopper–Pearson exact method. Results A total of 1022 ALC patients were included. Male patients predominated (90.5%). ECG abnormalities were observed in 353 patients (34.5%). Prolonged QT interval was most common in ALC patients with ECG abnormalities, which occurred in 109. Thirty-five ALC patients underwent the cardiac MRI examination and only one patient was found with cardiomyopathy. The estimated prevalence rate of alcoholic cardiomyopathy in all the ALC patients was 0.0286 (95% CI, 0.0007–0.1492). There was no statistical difference regarding the prevalence rate between the group of patients with ECG abnormalities and the group without ECG abnormalities (0.0400 vs. 0.0000, P = 1.000). Conclusion Although ECG abnormalities, especially QT prolongation, existed in a proportion of ALC patients, cardiomyopathy in the patient population was not common. Further larger-sample studies based on cardiac MRI are needed to verify our results.
