Recycling of unfilled polyurethane rubber using high‐power ultrasound

Abstract: This investigation deals with the recycling of polyurethane rubber by the application of high-power ultrasound in a continuous ultrasonic coaxial reactor. The cured rubber has been devulcanized at various feed rates and various gap sizes and then revulcanized again with certain adjustments in the curing recipe. The die pressure and the total power consumption have been recorded as a function of the processing conditions. The rheological and mechanical properties, hardness, gel fraction, and crosslink density o… Show more

“…The devulcanized rubber can be reprocessed, shaped, and revulcanized in the same way as the virgin rubber. Extensive studies of ultrasonic devulcanization have been carried out on various rubbers, including ground tire rubber (GTR),12, 13 natural rubber (NR),14, 15 silicone rubber,16, 17 styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR),18 ethylene–propylene–diene rubber (EPDM),19 polyurethane rubber,20 and butadiene rubber (BR) 21…”

“…1,2,3 Extensive studies have been carried out on a wide variety of rubbers including ground tire rubber, 3,4 natural rubber (NR), 5 ethylene-propylene diene rubber (EPDM), 6 styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), 7 poly (dimethylsiloxane) silicone rubber (PDMS), 8 polyurethane rubber 9 and butyl rubber. However, rubber recovery is an arduous enterprise since the formation of a threedimensional crosslinking network is a non-reversible process.…”
