h i g h l i g h t s• A co-treatment process for recovery of Co and Li and simultaneous detoxification of PVC in subcritical water was proposed.• PVC was used as a hydrochloric acid source.• More than 95% Co and nearly 98% Li were leached under the optimum conditions.• Neither corrosive acid nor reducing agent was used.• The co-treatment process has technical, economic and environmental benefits over the traditional recovery processes. a r t i c l e i n f o In this work, an effective and environmentally friendly process for the recovery of cobalt (Co) and lithium (Li) from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and simultaneously detoxification of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in subcritical water was developed. Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2 ) power from spent LIBs and PVC were co-treated by subcritical water oxidation, in which PVC served as a hydrochloric acid source to promote metal leaching. The dechlorination of PVC and metal leaching was achieved simultaneously under subcritical water oxidation. More than 95% Co and nearly 98% Li were recovered under the optimum conditions: temperature 350• C, PVC/LiCoO 2 ratio 3:1, time 30 min, and a solid/liquid ratio 16:1 (g/L), respectively. Moreover, PVC was completely dechlorinated at temperatures above 350• C without any release of toxic chlorinated organic compounds. Assessment on economical and environmental impacts revealed that the PVC and LiCoO 2 subcritical co-treatment process had significant technical, economic and environmental benefits over the traditional hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy processes. This innovative co-treatment process is efficient, environmentally friendly and adequate for Co and Li recovery from spent LIBs and simultaneous dechlorination of PVC in subcritical water.

Abstract:In order to upgrade polymer waste during recycling, separation should take place at high purity. The present research was aimed to develop a novel, alternative separation opportunity, where the polymer fractions were separated by centrifugal force in melted state. The efficiency of the constructed separation equipment was verified by two immiscible plastics (polyethylene terephthalate, PET; low density polyethylene, LDPE), which have a high difference of density, and of which large quantities can also be found in the municipal solid waste. The results show that the developed equipment is suitable not only for separating dry blended mixtures of PET/LDPE into pure components again, but also for separating prefabricated polymer blends. By this process it becomes possible to recover pure polymer substances from multi-component products during the recycling process. The adequacy of results was verified by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement as well as optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

IntroduçãoA indústria de embalagens é uma grande consumidora de plásticos. Em 2008, a indústria brasileira de embalagens foi avaliada em US$ 24.636 milhões, correspondendo a um total de 7,5 milhões de toneladas, sendo equivalente a 1,6% do produto interno bruto. Deste montante, as embalagens plásticas representaram 22%, em massa, e 25%, em valor. Os polímeros mais utilizados em embalagens plásticas são o poli(tereftalato de etileno) -PET, polipropileno -PP, polietileno de baixa densidade -PEBD e polietileno de alta densidade -PEAD (em massa), porém quando se considera a contribuição em valor a ordem de importância é alterada para PEBD, PP, PET e PEAD, conforme apresentado na Tabela 1. Além disso, o consumo de embalagens plásticas tem crescido de 4 a 7% ao ano [1] . A principal aplicação das embalagens plásticas é o setor alimentício (65%), que apresentou um consumo de 1.085.003 t, em 2008, no qual os segmentos de bebidas não-alcoólicas (531.286 t), laticínios e gorduras (196.683 t), carnes e vegetais (157.521 t) são os mais expressivos. No setor não-alimentício (582.531 t), os segmentos de química e agricultura (237.381 t), produtos de limpeza (187.242 t), higiene e beleza (141.039 t) são os principais usuários das embalagens plásticas [1] . Por este motivo é importante que as embalagens apresentem o símbolo de identificação do material, a fim de facilitar a cadeia de reciclagem. Muitos produtos de materiais plásticos apresentam código de identificação da resina (normalmente um número de 1 a 7 dentro de um triângulo de três setas e sob o mesmo uma abreviatura), cujo objetivo é indicar o tipo de plástico do qual o produto é feito e auxiliar sua separação e posterior reciclagem e revalorização. Ou seja, tenta-se facilitar a recuperação dos materiais plásticos descartados com o resíduo sólido urbano. O objetivo deste estudo foi efetuar um levantamento de dados sobre os símbolos de identificação de materiais em embalagens plásticas flexíveis, para avaliar se o mercado está adotando a identificação corretamente ou se ainda existe falta de informação. Foi avaliado um total de 509 embalagens plásticas flexíveis para acondicionar produtos alimentícios e não alimentícios disponíveis no mercado brasileiro. Apesar de a norma brasileira ABNT NBR 13230 já estar em sua segunda revisão, ainda existe muita heterogeneidade na identificação das embalagens plásticas. Somente cerca de 50% das embalagens avaliadas apresentaram o símbolo de identificação da resina. Além disso, em alguns casos cerca de 30% das embalagens apresentaram a identificação do material de forma incorreta.
