Recycling of Chrome-Containing Waste from a Mining and Processing Plant to Produce Industrial Products

Abstract: Prolonged development of ore deposits, ore beneficiation and metallurgical smelting of concentrates result in the accumulation of wastes, forming large-scale dumps and sludge ponds negatively affecting the environment and human health. The creation and introduction of industrial waste treatment technologies will make it possible to dispose of them with the production of valuable commercial products and improve the environmental situation. In a research article on chemical beneficiation with the subsequent grav… Show more

“…When determining self-grinding, a mill was adopted, having: speed of rotation-80 rpm, working volume-5170 cm 3 , and working surface-1060 cm 3 . As an indicator of resistance to grinding, the value p was chosen, the reciprocal of self-grinding, and was equal to the difference in the amount of weight of the pellet sample remaining in the mill and dust.…”

“…Integrated processing of low-grade and substandard chromium ores, as well as sludge tailings, while improving environmental performance, dramatically increases the value of using non-traditional raw materials in factories for the production of composite chromiumcontaining products and pigments [3,4].…”

“…A sustainable material requires three main environmental characteristics: to be prepared from recycled materials including industrial wastes (in other words, to help diminish the dumps amount), to have a low carbon footprint or to help reduce CO 2 emissions and to be utilized for environmentally friendly applications [15,16]. Thus, a sustainable material design implies using a significant amount of industrial wastes (preventing their dumping) and ensures their further processing in an environmentally friendly manner.…”

“…Such wastes being a fine-dispersed product negatively affect the ecological situation in the region and in the case of their processing can be secondary mineral resources (so-called technogenic mineral deposits of chromium raw materials). In our previously published work [29] the results on gravitational enrichment of chrome tailings with obtaining of conditioned fine chrome concentrate are given. However, fine chromite concentrate cannot be used for smelting ferrochrome in AC electric arc furnaces, as it will lead to an increase in dust emission into the gas duct system of furnace units, which will increase the amount of circulating intermediate products.…”
