In civil engineering applications, epoxy-based polymers are subject to different environmental conditions including in-service temperature, which might accelerate their degradation and limit their application ranges. Recently, different particulate fillers were introduced to enhance the mechanical properties and reduce the cost of epoxy-based polymers. This paper addresses the effect of in-service elevated temperature (from room temperature to 80 o C) in particulate-filled epoxy based resin containing up to 60% by volume of fire retardant and fly ash fillers through a deep understanding of the microstructure and analysis of their mechanistic response. An improvement in the retention of mechanical properties at in-service elevated temperature was achieved by increasing the percentages of fillers. The retention of compressive and split tensile strength at 80 o C for the mix containing 60% fillers was 72% and 52%, respectively, which was significantly higher than the neat epoxy. Thermo-dynamic analysis showed an increase in glass transition temperature with the inclusion of fillers, while these mixes also experienced less weight loss compared to neat epoxy, indicating better thermal stability. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the formation of dense microstructures for particulate-filled epoxy based resin at elevated temperatures. Current Sustainable Trends of Using Waste Materials in Concrete—A Decade Review

Concrete is the most used construction material in the world. Consequently, the mass extraction of virgin materials required for concrete production causes major environmental impacts. With a focus on promoting sustainability, numerous research studies on incorporating waste materials to replace virgin substances in concrete were undertaken. Despite this vast volume of published literature, systematic research studies on these sustainable concrete mixes that inform various stakeholders on current research trends, future research directions, and marketability options products are seldom conducted. This paper presents a decade review on sustainable concrete with a focus on virgin materials being replaced with waste materials. It aims to inform researchers of current research trends and gaps in the research area of waste material use in concrete. The review also identifies key parameters that restrict the marketability of these sustainable concrete products. The three-step research methodology involves a bibliometric assessment, a key review of selected waste materials, and an interview with a panel of experts focusing on impediments towards the transition of sustainable concrete products into the industry market. Bibliometric assessment was based on 1465 research publications in which five key materials (plastic, glass, fly ash, slag) and construction and demolition waste were selected for the review. The interview was conducted with ten industry experts to discuss the industry limitations in the commercial establishment of materials. The review of existing knowledge and the findings on sustainable concrete presented in this paper provide directions for both research academics and industry stakeholders to systematically focus on sustainable concrete products that are market-ready.

To reduce the environmental damage caused by waste rubber, crumb rubber concrete (CRC) was prepared by replacing some fine aggregates with crumb rubber. The effects of elevated temperature as well as crumb rubber content on the mechanical properties of the prepared CRC were studied. The crumb rubber contents were 0%, 10%, and 20%, while CRC was subjected to atmospheric temperatures (AT) of 300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C. The concrete without crumb rubber content was used as the control group at the atmospheric temperature. The mass loss, thermal conductivity characteristics, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, axial compressive strength, elastic modulus, and stress-strain characteristics of CRC at elevated temperatures were studied. The experimental results show that: (1) With the increase in crumb rubber content and temperature, the cracks on the surface of the specimen gradually widen while the mass loss of the specimen increases. (2) With the increase in crumb rubber content and temperature, the cube compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, axial compressive strength, and elastic modulus of CRC decrease, yet the plastic failure characteristics of CRC are more obvious. (3) The influences of elevated temperature on strength and elastic modulus are as follows: splitting tensile strength > elastic modulus > axial compressive strength > cubic compressive strength. (4) With the increase in temperature, the stress-strain curve of the CRC tends to flatten, the peak stress decreases, and the corresponding peak strain significantly increases. With the increase in crumb rubber content, there is a great decrease in peak stress, yet the corresponding peak strain is basically the same. The use of CRC can be prioritized in applications that increase toughness rather than strength.
