Recycled cafeteria food waste as a feed for swine: nutrient content digestibility, growth, and meat quality.

Abstract: This project was undertaken to compare growth, meat quality, and diet digestibility when pigs were fed cafeteria food waste (FW) or a corn/soybean meal (CSM) diet. Cafeteria food waste (36 samples) fed in the growing and finishing experiment averaged 22.4% DM, 21.4% CP, 14.1% ADF, 27.2% ether extract, and 3.2% ash. The first experiment used 50 crossbred pigs randomly assigned to four diets. During the growing phase, pigs fed a CSM diet gained faster (P < .05) than pigs fed FW or FW plus energy supplements. “…Therefore, the resource utilization of food waste, such as anaerobic biogas production (Cekmecelioglu and Uncu, 2013;Chen et al, 2014;Forster-Carneiro et al, 2008;Tawfik and El-Qelish, 2012), feedstuff production (Kwak and Kang, 2006;Jin et al, 2012;Westendorf et al, 1998;Yang et al, 2006), and composting (Hwang et al, 2002;Seng et al, 2013;Kim et al, 2008), draws particular attention of researchers as well as administrators. For instance, from 2010 to 2014, the Chinese government launched a program for the resource utilization and safe treatment of food waste in 67 pilot cities, with the total treatment capacity as 17,770 tons/day.…”

“…The use of by-products from agricultural, industrial processing and left over, such as cafeteria left over (Luu et al, 2000) is a good alternative which can help improve producers' economic returns. The use of food wastes as animal feed is an alternative of high interest since it produces an environmental and public benefit besides reducing the cost of animal production (Westendorf et al, 1998;Myer et al, 1999;Westendorf, 2000).…”
