Recurrent secondary frosted branch angiitis after toxoplasmosis vasculitis

Abstract: ABSTRACT.Purpose: To describe a case of recurrent frosted branch angiitis after treatment of ocular toxoplasmosis. Methods: In a 6-year-old boy, we found perivascular, creamy, patchy, retinal sheathing in both eyes without any focal necrotizing retinochoroiditis or scarring. IgM antibodies for toxoplasma gondii were also found. The patient was treated with antitoxoplasmosis medication and a systemic steroid. Results: Several years after treatment of the toxoplasmosis, frosted branch angiitis occurred twice wit… Show more

“…Frosted branch angiitis (FBA), first reported by Ito et al [1] in Japan in 1976 as a form of pediatric uveitis, is a rare form of acute uveitis with severe vasculitis in which sheathing of the vessels looks like frosted branches of a tree. While the primary cause of FBA is unknown, some viral infections, toxoplasmosis, and Behçet's disease have been reported to be associated with the pathogenesis of FBA [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…Complications include an epiretinal membrane, retinal fibrosis, and atrophic lesions [8]. Finally, recurrence of the disease is typically rare, though there has been a reported case of secondary frosted branch angiitis due to toxoplasmosis that recurred twice after initial treatment [10].…”
