“…For example, parents rearing a child with special needs often experience more stress compared to parents whose children are developing normally (Hassall et al 2005;Innocenti et al 1992;Pelchat et al 1999;Russo and Fallon 2001), possibly due to the greater demands placed on these parents' time and resources. Similarly, studies have found higher levels of stress in parents of children with health problems compared to healthy controls (e.g., recurrent otitis media; Forgays et al 1992).…”

“…Most previously reported studies relating parentchild stress and/or children's behavior to the children's previous experience with otitis media have had retrospective 1,7,8,[13][14][15] or cross-sectional 2,6,10 designs, and most have considered only children Ͼ3 years of age. [2][3][4]5,7,8,10,[12][13][14][15] The cross-sectional studies have, of necessity, related behavioral measures only to concurrent and not to past experience with otitis media, and thus provide little insight into possible lasting, long-term relationships.…”

“…Although there has been some research linking minor illnesses during early childhood to family functioning (Forgays et al, 1992;Frank et al, 1991;Vernon-Feagans and Wamboldt, 1999), there are few studies in this area. It may not be the amount of child illness in and of itself that impacts families, but children's symptoms and parental perceptions of these illnesses.…”

“…Mothers of children who had had a long history of illness during the first 3 years of life reported significantly more parenting stress by the child's fourth year of life than did mothers of healthier children. Forgays et al (1992) examined the effects of recurrent otitis media (ear infections) in preschool children on parental attitudes and behaviors. The authors' findings suggested that a history of recurrent otitis media was associated with a perception of the child as more demanding and, subsequently, more stressful to mothers in comparison to other children without a history of otitis media.…”
