Recurrent ischemic stroke in a patient with ulcerative colitis and high levels of lipoprotein (a)

Abstract: Cerebral infarction associated with ulcerative colitis is particularly rare, but clinically important because of its high morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis of thrombosis in ulcerative colitis remains unclear even if platelet and coagulation cascade abnormalities, systemic inflammation, and the presence of other well recognized vascular risk factors are likely to play a key role in clot formation. We report a case of a young woman with recurrent ischemic stroke secondary to the interaction between ulcer… Show more

“…Patent foramen ovale, paradoxical embolism from peripheral venous system, embolization from thrombi formed within the atrial septum, intracardiac thrombi as a result of arrhythmias, and inherited and secondary thrombophilia are considered important stroke risk factors [11]. However, there are other uncommon causes of thrombosis [12,13]. Specifically, it is known that aPL is causatively related to the clinical manifestations of APLS, and are not merely innocent markers of aPL related ischemic stroke [1,2].…”
