Recurrent and Injurious Falls in the Year Following Hip Fracture: A Prospective Study of Incidence and Risk Factors From the Sarcopenia and Hip Fracture Study

Abstract: Recurrent and injurious falls are common after hip fracture and are associated with multiple risk factors, many of which are treatable. Interventions should therefore be tailored to alleviating or reversing any nutritional, physiological, and psychosocial risk factors of individual patients.

“…In almost 900 older adults, men but not women with sarcopenic obesity had increased odds of reporting a past-year fall (OR: 3.34, 95% CI 1.37-8.26) (5). A study including 193 communitydwelling older adults examined the year after hip fracture did not report an association for sarcopenic obesity with falls outcomes (27). This evidence suggests that inconsistent associations exist between sarcopenic obesity and falls in older adults and similarly inconsistent associations with physical performance outcomes previously are likely due in part to heterogeneous definitions (28).…”

“…7,8 It has been estimated that 55.6% of hip fracture patients had at least one fall within 12 months, 11.8% sustained a fall-related fracture and 5% sustained a fall-related hip fracture. 9 Mortality during the first year after fracture ranges from 8.4% to 36%. 4 …”

“…I en studie fant man at 56 % av pasientene med hoftebrudd opplevde et nytt fall i løpet av det første året. 12 % av disse fallene resulterte i et brudd og 5 % i et nytt hoftebrudd (10). Årsakene til fall er mange og sammensatte, og utreding av falltendens hos pasienter med mange kroniske sykdommer og uklar fallårsak er en typisk geriatrisk oppgave (11).…”
