Recurrence Rate and Relevant Associated Factors of Stroke among Patients with Small Artery Occlusion in Northern China

Abstract: Small artery occlusion (SAO) is responsible for 31.3% of all ischemic strokes in China. However, reports regarding the recurrence rate of SAO in China are rare. We aimed to assess the recurrence rate and factors associated with SAO in China. All consecutive patients with SAO hospitalized at Tianjin Huanhu Hospital from 2005 to 2014 were recruited. We assessed the association between stroke subtype, severity, and disease history with recurrence at 3, 12, and 36 months of onset using multivariate logistic regres… Show more

“…is result indicates that DBP was a confounder. Our results are consistent with previous studies that have demonstrated that increased SBP increases the risk of stroke recurrence [13][14][15][16][17]. SBP measurement during the first 24 hours of stroke is a prognostic factor of stroke recurrence and has been used to identify high-risk patients [18].…”

“…Recurrent strokes often affect the same brain hemisphere and location as the index stroke [5]. is tropism for the injured brain is due to altered anatomy and physiology of the injured brain [15]. An index stroke damages the cerebral blood vessels making them prone to subsequent strokes [29].…”

“…[ 13 ] SAO is a major ischemic stroke subtype that occurs more commonly in Asian than Western populations. [ 14 ] However, to date, no evidence has shown the effectives of intravenous rt-PA for patients with stroke attributable to SAO. We acknowledge some of the limitations of this study.…”

“…Epidemiological data indicate that the stroke recurrence increases over time. The 1-year recurrence rate of ischemic stroke ranges from 6 to 12%, while the 5-year recurrence rate rises to 16 to 22%, [80][81][82][83][84] depending on the patients' age, sex, comorbidities, and stroke subtype. Standard of care for secondary prevention in stroke patients is mainly focusing on optimizing treatment of the metabolic syndrome (obesity, hypertension, diabetes), which is a common comorbidity, cardiovascular risk factor, and often cause of the incident stroke.…”
