Recurrence of Subdural Haematoma in a Population-Based Cohort – Risks and Predictive Factors

Abstract: ObjectivesTo estimate the risks of and identify predictors for recurrent subdural haematoma in surgically and conservatively treated patients.MethodsThe cohort comprised all individuals diagnosed with a first-time subdural hematoma in Denmark 1996–2011. Information on potential predictors was retrieved from the Danish health registers. Cumulative recurrence risks were estimated using the Aalen-Johansen estimator. Rate ratios (RR) were estimated using Poisson regression.ResultsAmong 10,158 individuals with a su… Show more

“…As the aging population continues to grow, CSDH prevalence is increasing, becoming one of the most common cranial neurosurgical conditions and a significant public health problem 1. Furthermore, traditional treatments, including surgical evacuation, have proven disappointing with a high incidence of recurrence at 1 year, averaging approximately 15% 2…”

“…20,21 SDHs have a high recurrence rate, with one study reporting a cumulative recurrence risk of 14% within the first year. 22 TXA could potentially reduce the SDH recurrence rate 23 and be used as nonsurgical treatment for chronic SDH. 24,25 Thus, the aim of this systematic review is to summarize and discuss the evidence for the use of TXA in patients with SAH or SDH.…”

“…The use of anticoagulant therapy and the population's multiple comorbid conditions (age, dementia diabetes, chronic hepatic disease, to name a few) are frequently implicated in its recurrence. 3,4 However, the use of anticoagulant therapy in our patients did not correlate with the readmission rate.…”

“…Recurrence of TSDH occurs largely within the first year after the initial incidence of TSDH, estimated at 14 per cent. 4 In our study, we elected to concentrate on the first six months after discharge since the majority of our readmitted patients are in a higher age group (mean 4 73 years, standard deviation 4 16.87, range 4 30-90).…”
