Recurrence of positive SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in recovered COVID-19 patients during medical isolation observation

Abstract: Recently, the recurrence of positive SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in recovered COVID-19 patients is receiving more attention. Herein we report a cohort study on the follow-up of 182 recovered patients under medical isolation observation. Twenty (10.99%) patients out of the 182 were detected to be SARS-CoV-2 RNA positive (re-positives), although none showed any clinical symptomatic recurrence, indicating that COVID-19 responds well to treatment. Patients aged under 18 years had higher re-positive rates than average, an… Show more

“…For SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies, a recent investigation reveals that a similar duration of antiviral responses exists after the recovery ( Gudbjartsson et al, 2020 ). Because of the occurrence of re-infection cases in Europe and the USA ( Hoang et al, 2020 , Yuan et al, 2020 ), whether the existing antiviral antibodies exert protection against re-infection needs to be urgently investigated in the future through a long-term follow-up.…”

“…Only 3 out of the 417 patients died of COVID-19 during hospitalization. A total of 253 of the 417 patients were sent to Shenzhen Samii Medical Center for a 14-day medical observation and follow up after discharge from the Third People's Hospital of Shenzhen 17 . During the observation period, all patients underwent voluntary and free medical examination in order to determine their health status.…”

“…The discharge criteria for COVID-19 patients were two negative SARS-CoV-2 virus tests and obvious improvement of pulmonary imaging symptoms. Despite meeting the discharge criteria, a significant proportion of discharged COVID-19 patients still had some symptoms including psychiatric symptoms, gastrointestinal reaction and low immunity 15 , 16 ; some of them were even found to be recurrence of positive SARS‑CoV‑2 viral RNA one or more times 17 . Therefore, dynamic surveillance of physical conditions such as peripheral blood system, liver function, kidney function and cardiovascular system, and how to promote recovery of discharged COVID-19 patients from the symptoms are very meaningful 18 .…”
