Rectal duplication cyst in a cat

Abstract: Enteric duplication is a rare developmental malformation in people, dogs and cats. The purpose of the present report is to describe the first case of a rectal duplication cyst in a 7-year-old domestic shorthair cat presenting for acute constipation and tenesmus. On rectal palpation a spherical mass compressing the lumen of the rectum could be felt in the dorsal wall of the rectum. A computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed the presence of a well demarcated cystic lesion in the pelvic canal, dorsal to the rectum… Show more

“…Intestinal duplication cysts are uncommon congenital malformations reported in humans, dogs, and cats, and can occur anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract. In cats, duplication has been reported in the duodenum ileum, colon, rectum, and esophagus . In humans and dogs, ultrasonographic features of double‐layered wall or “muscular rim” sign, hyperechoic mucosa, and hypoechoic muscle layer are relatively specific for enteric duplication .…”

“…Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can define the precise anatomic location and can be helpful in difficult cases that require a multiplanar approach . In this patient, a CT scan was performed to plan the surgery and to exclude other congenital defects, especially vertebral anomalies that have been previously associated with distal intestinal duplications . No vertebral anomalies were noted on the abdominal radiograph or CT study.…”

“…Enteric duplication is a rare developmental malformation in veterinary medicine (Radlinsky et al 2005 ;Kook et al 2010). Grossly, duplicated intestinal segments are usually blind sacs or cysts that share a wall with the normal intestine (Spaulding et al 1990).…”
