Recovery of an Oxisol Degraded by the Construction of a Hydroelectric Power Plant

Abstract: the removal of thick layers of soil under native scrubland (Cerrado) on the right bank of the Paraná River in selvíria (state of Mato grosso do sul, brazil) for construction of the ilha solteira hydroelectric Power Plant caused environmental damage, affecting the revegetation process of the stripped soil. over the years, various kinds of land use and management systems have been tried, and the aim of this study was to assess the effects of these attempts to restore the structural quality of the soil. The exper… Show more

“…The soil under cerrado, which presents a thicker plant cover, showed the highest total porosity value, 0.53 m 3 .m -3 , in spite of its rougher particle size distribution (Carvalho et al , 2015), probably due to is high sand content.…”

“…In this sense, in the study of Rodrigues et al (2007), which was carried out at experimental farm at the UNESP of Ilha Solteira, the cerrado and pasture MWD's also showed high indices when compared to the farm's degraded soils. Kemper and Chepil (1965) and using simulated rainfall according to Roth (1985) and Carvalho et al (2015).…”

“…The fact that the goat manure promoted growth of Urochloa decumbens leads to a paradox in relation to the use this type of manure in restoration areas. On one side, Urochloa decumbens has been widely and successfully used to promote amelioration of soil physical and chemical attributes in degraded areas in the Brazilian Cerrado (CARVALHO et al, 2015). On the other side, the development of this plant in Cerrado areas is not ecologically desirable, since it can dominate large patches of the environment, threaten native plants and jeopardize local biodiversity (PIVELLO et al, 1999), possibly causing loss of threatened species (LANNES et al, 2012).…”

“…These natural communities undergo several human pressures, such as the expansion agro-industry and the construction of hydroelectric power stations. The construction of dams in such areas caused the removal of the upper soil layers, having created areas where the total vegetation and part of the soil surface as well as the seed bank were mechanically removed (Carvalho et al, 2015). In the region of Ilha Solteira/SP, the removal of approximately 9 meters of the original soil profile for the construction of the dam foundation of the hydropower plant of Ilha Solteira -Usina Hidrelétrica de Ilha Solteira -effectively eliminated the vegetation of a massive area (Carvalho et al, 2015).…”
