Recovery and removal of nutrients from swine wastewater by using a novel integrated reactor for struvite decomposition and recycling

Abstract: In the present study, struvite decomposition was performed by air stripping for ammonia release and a novel integrated reactor was designed for the simultaneous removal and recovery of total ammonia-nitrogen (TAN) and total orthophosphate (PT) from swine wastewater by internal struvite recycling. Decomposition of struvite by air stripping was found to be feasible. Without supplementation with additional magnesium and phosphate sources, the removal ratio of TAN from synthetic wastewater was maintained at >80% b… Show more

“…This process is regarded as the end step of wastewater treatment, even when multiple P treatment technologies are being employed. Following this step, more than 92% of P may have been removed from wastewater 4 5 6 7 . However, the struvite crystallization process is hindered by small particle size and crystal growth control difficulties.…”

“…In soil, if PO 4 3− can be released from struvite which formed in the process of nutrients recovery from wastewater, heavy metals immobilization may be achieved by formation of metal‐phosphate, and a ‘bridge’ between wastewater treatment and soil remediation will be constructed. According to Equation , high alkalinity is beneficial to dissolution of struvite, and OH − can react with Mg 2+ easier than PO 4 3− . Hence, PO 4 3− may be released from struvite for heavy metals immobilization when plant ash is mixed with plant ash to increase pH of soil.…”
