Recovering Iron from Iron Ore Tailings and Preparing Concrete Composite Admixtures

Abstract: Iron ore tailings (IOTs) are a form of solid waste produced during the beneficiation process of iron ore concentrate. In this paper, iron recovery from IOTs was studied at different points during a process involving pre-concentration followed by direct reduction and magnetic separation. Then, slag-tailing concrete composite admixtures were prepared from high-silica residues. Based on the analyses of the chemical composition and crystalline phases, a pre-concentration test was developed, and a pre-concentrated … Show more

“…The physico-mechanical properties of the cement composites containing the IOC, also at the high temperature, are significantly connected with the chemical composition of the concentrate. The chemical composition of the IOC is, in turn, closely related to the method of the iron ore enrichment [ 67 , 68 ]. The high content of SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 in the IOC makes possible to use the waste IOC as an admixture to the cement.…”

“…Iron tailings are solid waste residues that are discharged to tailings pond after cleaning and screening after iron-bearing ore bene ciation [1]. At present, more than 90% of iron tailings in China are stacked outdoors, occupying a large amount of arable land, which has caused serious environmental pollution, and only less than 10% of iron tailings are comprehensively utilized in construction materials [2,3].…”

“…However, tailings may be a source of high-grade minerals and supply metals with substantial economic value in the current mineral market. They could also be used as raw material in the production of concrete composites [1,2]. As the remaining metals contained in the solid phase of tailings, not recovered at the time of production, represent potential resources, reprocessing could be an alternative to global metal consumption from the perspective of sustainable mining [3][4][5].…”
