Recording and Analysis of Goldmann Kinetic Visual Fields

Abstract: Goldmann kinetic perimetry is a commonly used method of evaluating the peripheral visual field. Ongoing gene therapy trials have targeted the central retina, but have nonetheless often included Goldmann kinetic perimetry as part of extensive preinterventional and postinterventional assessment. Future gene therapy trials may target the entire retina through intravitreal injections, as have drug therapeutic trials, further necessitating the evaluation of function across the entire retina. In the following pages,… Show more

“…In general, prior work has emphasized qualitative descriptions of the patterns of VF loss using topography and imaging. 5 , 11 , 18 The quantitative method that we developed may facilitate future research to better understand the influence of patient-, disease-, and environment-related factors on peripheral retinal function in RP. Further analysis of this dataset by detailed genotype characteristics was beyond the scope of the current work but may be useful to generate hypotheses regarding genetic determinants of the differences in pVF preservation.…”

“…The clinical diagnosis of RP was determined by an inherited retinal diseases specialist, based on a combination of all available clinical data including symptoms of nyctalopia or peripheral vision loss, mid-peripheral pigmentary retinopathy on biomicroscopy or imaging studies, visual field constriction, and scotopic full-field electroretinogram reduction that was greater than photopic reduction. GVFs, having been recorded according to the standard protocol, 7 , 11 were extracted as PDFs from the electronic case records. The cross-sectional dataset included the first (or only) GVF of that subject.…”

“…As such, solid angles are less sensitive to peripheral distortions than are area measures 18. The VF solid angles (in steradians, “sr”) in this study were derived by on-screen digitizing of the scanned OVFs and GVFs by using the FieldDigitize v4.0 program 1820. All digitizing was performed by the same person.…”

“…Visual functions assessment was performed with a standard visual acuity test, Goldman kinetic perimetry, 40 and Goal Attainment Scale (GAS). 41 GAS is a sensitive individualized, criterion-referenced method measuring specific outcomes on individual goals after a period of treatment and widely used to supplement standardized measures of outcome that investigated, pre/post treatment and in follow-up, the modification of specific parameters; in our article, we have analyzed compliance with the treatment, visual acuity, visual field, and visual fixation.…”
