Recorded Ground Motion and Estimated Soil Amplification for the 11 May 2011 Lorca Earthquake

Abstract: On 11 May 2011 an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 ( M w) hit the Murcia region of Spain causing significant damage to buildings in the town of Lorca. Accelerograms were recorded by stations of the Instituto Geográfico Nacional, and high-amplitude ground motions were observed at the Lorca station, with a peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.37 g. The contribution of a near-field component of ground motion is shown in time histories and in elastic response spectra. Features of near-field ground motions such as direct… Show more

“…As was mentioned previously, the unique building that collapsed during the earthquake of magnitude 5. the foreshock [23]. Fortunately, for this reason, the building was without persons during the earthquake of magnitude 5.1 [6,23]. This specific case is a reference to infer that parapets in buildings suffered also some grade of damage during the earthquake of magnitude 4.5, but the earthquake of magnitude 5.1 was the event that generated the collapse of the parapets that caused the death of persons.…”

“…This code is based on the simulation of the surface-wave field (Rayleigh and Love) in plane-parallel multi-layered structures, according to the theory described by Aki [36] and BenMenahem and Singh [37]. Details of the H/V modelling technique code implemented in Grilla and its validation are published in [38,39].…”
