Record ofXya pfaendleriHarz, 1970 (Orthoptera: Tridactylidae) in the Czech Republic: evidence that the species is spreading north

Abstract

Xya pfaendleri was observed in the Czech Republic at one locality in 2013. The X. pfaendleri population in the Czech Republic must have established only recently (within the last two years) because the species was absent (except for one specimen detected in the 1960s) in the Czech Republic before 2011. The new population is located in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic at a latitude that is similar to that of X. pfaendleri localities in Slovakia. These populations represent the northeastern edge of the X. pfaendleri distributional range. The locality of the Czech population has a similar longitude as X. pfaendleri localities in Austria. The Czech locality is a flooded gravel pit. A related species, Xya variegata, has been recently recorded in several regions in the Czech Republic and is distributed further west and north than X. pfaendleri. The northernmost and very abundant population of X. variegata in the Czech Republic was probably established recently. As with other Orthoptera with substantial migratory capabilities, X. variegata and X. pfaendleri are currently spreading northward in the Czech Republic.Résumé. Observation de Xya pfaendleri Harz 1970 (Orthoptera : Tridactylidae) en République Tchèque : arguments démontrants que l'espèce s'étend vers le nord. Xya pfaendleri a été observé dans une localité de la République Tchèque en 2013. Le population de X. pfaendleri de République Tchèque semble s'être installée récemment, probablement dans les deux dernières années. En effet, mis à part un seul spécimen observé dans les années 1960, l'espèce a été absente du pays jusque 2011. La nouvelle population est située dans la partie méridionale de la République Tchèque à une latitude similaire de celle de l'espèce en Slovaquie. Ces populations représentent la limite nord de la distribution de X. pfaendleri. La localité de la population tchèque est aussi située à la même longitude que les localités de l'espèce en Autriche. La localité tchèque est une gravière inondée. Une espèce apparentée, Xya variegata, a été observée dans plusieurs régions du pays et sa distribution s'étend plus au nord et plus à l'ouest que X. pfaendleri. La population la plus au nord et la plus abondante de X. variegata ne s'est probablement établiée que récemment dans le pays. Comme d'autres orthoptèrers qui ont des capacités migratoires subtancielles, X. variegata et X. pfaendleri étendent leur distribution vers le nord en République Tchèque.
