Record linkage software in the public domain: a comparison of Link Plus, The Link King, and a `basic' deterministic algorithm

Abstract: The study objective was to compare the accuracy of a deterministic record linkage algorithm and two public domain software applications for record linkage (The Link King and Link Plus). The three algorithms were used to unduplicate an administrative database containing personal identifiers for over 500,000 clients. Subsequently, a random sample of linked records was submitted to four research staff for blinded clerical review. Using reviewers' decisions as the 'gold standard', sensitivity and positive predicti… Show more

“…17,18 The PDMP vendor uses a proprietary, largely deterministic algorithm to link prescriptions for the same individual, based on name, birth date, and address. However, an individual may not always be uniquely identified, due to nicknames, misspellings, transposed digits or characters, changes in surname, or changes in residence.…”

“…Each state linked treatment data with arrest and incarceration data from their criminal justice agencies (e.g., Department of Corrections, state patrols) and stripped all personally identifying information before sending data to the study's analytic team. In Washington and Connecticut, the Link King software, which uses probabilistic matching, was used for linking the data (Campbell et al, 2008). In Oklahoma, probabilistic matching was used based on last name, fi rst name, Social Security number, date of birth, gender, and race.…”

“…Contact screening and management in this jurisdiction is guided by state policy directives. Cases of active TB among the study population were identified by linking a database containing details for all identified contacts and the NSW notifiable diseases database (which includes the TB registry) using a combination of probabilistic and deterministic linkage methods [3].…”

“…Pleurodesis is considered as an alternative treatment when surgical repair is impossible due to an underlying comorbidity. Diverse chemical and biological substances, including autologous blood [2], talc [3,4], fibrin [5] and antibiotics [6], have demonstrated various efficiencies to treat PAL. Recently, an endobronchial valve (EBV) was successfully utilised to treat PAL [7][8][9].…”
