“…This article aims to contribute to the analysis of broadcast news reports by analysing the multimodal representations of space on four broadcast news reports portraying encapuchados (hooded protesters) at various student demonstrations in Santiago, Chile, between 2014 and 2017. Grounded in a Multimodal Critical Approach to Discourse Studies (Machin, 2013), we argue that the representation of space is crucial in the construction of the multimodal metaphor HOODED STUDENT IS CANCER, which represents the deviant youth as a disease that spreads through the social body (see Cárdenas and Pérez, 2017, 2018; Pérez and Cárdenas, 2018).
