Reconstruction of total solar irradiance 1974–2009

Abstract: Context. The study of variations in total solar irradiance (TSI) is important for understanding how the Sun affects the Earth's climate. Aims. Full-disk continuum images and magnetograms are now available for three full solar cycles. We investigate how modelled TSI compares with direct observations by building a consistent modelled TSI dataset. The model, based only on changes in the photospheric magnetic flux can then be tested on rotational, cyclical and secular timescales. Methods. We use Kitt Peak and SoHO… Show more

“…The latter result is also evident in the upgraded SATIRE model (Ball et al 2012). Thus, if ERB requires some correction during the ACRIM Gap, our results suggest that Fröhlich overestimated those corrections by at least a factor of two due to the fact that at least one of the two hypotheses (the ERB glitch in Sep/29/1989 or the ERB drift from Oct/1989 to 1992) are not confirmed by our cross-analysis.…”

“…The implementation of SATIRE employing solar images in visible light and solar magnetograms (magnetic field intensity and polarity) is termed SATIRE-S (Wenzler et al, 2005;Ball et al, 2012;Yeo et al, 2014), and that based on the sunspot number (SSN) is SATIRE-T (Krivova et al, 2010). Individual records are accessible at http://www2.mps.mpg.…”

“…Here I k (λ, r) is the emergent intensity from the component k at the wavelength λ along the direction r. The functions α k (t, r) are the fractional coverages of the solar disc by the component k along the direction r, so that α k (t, r) dΩ gives the elementary solid angle covered by the component k. The two main building blocks of our model are the spectra I k (λ, r) and the fractional coverages α k (t, r) of the quiet Sun and magnetic features. We utilise the fractional coverages deduced by Ball et al (2012) from the full-disc continuum images and magnetograms obtained by the Michelson Doppler Imager onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/MDI; Scherrer et al 1995). Ball et al (2012) successfully used these fractional coverages to reproduce 96% of TSI variations during cycle 23 (represented by the PMOD composite by Fröhlich 2006).…”
