this multidisciplinary work provides an updated assessment of possible future eruptive scenarios for the city of Rome. Seven new 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages from selected products of the Monti Sabatini and Vulsini volcanic districts, along with a compilation of all the literature ages on the colli Albani and Vico products, are used to reconstruct and compare the eruptive histories of the Monti Sabatini and colli Albani over the last 900 ka, in order to define their present state of activity. Petrographic analyses of the dated units characterize the crystal cargo, and Advanced-inSAR analysis highlights active deformation in the MS. We also review the historical and instrumental seismicity affecting this region. Based on the chronology of the most recent phases and the time elapsed between the last eruptions, we conclude that the waning/extinguishment of eruptive activity shifted progressively from nW to Se, from northern Latium toward the neapolitan area, crossing the city of Rome. Although Monti Sabatini is unaffected by the unrest indicators presently occurring at the Colli Albani, it should be regarded as a dormant volcanic district, as the time of 70 kyr elapsed since the last eruption is of the same order of the longest dormancies occurred in the past. The city of Rome was founded upon tuffaceous hills that are part of a thick pyroclastic plateau formed by the eruptions of two large volcanic districts: Monti Sabatini (MS) to the NW and Colli Albani (CA) to the SE (Fig. 1). A number of recent studies has ascertained the state of quiescence of the CA, given an average dormancy of 38.5 ± 1.5 kyr during the last 600 ka, and the occurrence of the most recent eruption at 36 ± 1 ka 1 (and references therein). Moreover, a 20 year-long InSAR data record revealed ongoing inflation with maximum uplift rates >2 mm/yr in the area hosting the most recent (<200 ka) eruptive vents, suggesting that magma recharge is possibly occurring at depth 2 (and references therein). In contrast, no similar studies have been undertaken in the MS so far, precluding a reliable assessment of its actual state. However, a recent geomorphologic study on the fluvial terraces of the Tiber Valley found evidence of ca. 50 m of differential uplift occurred along the MS eastern sector in the last 125 kyr, concurrent with the most recent phase of eruptive activity from multiple vents 1 (Fig. 1). For this reason, a dedicated research project has been conducted to refine the MS eruptive history through a set of new 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age determinations, and to assess possible active soil deformation, including seismotectonic processes and vertical movements, through InSAR analysis. The analysis of the regional seismicity, comparing instrumental and historical records for the four volcanic districts of Latium, is provided aiming at highlighting possible unrest indicators, as recently shown for the CA 2. Field data, U‐Th dating and amino acid racemisation (AAR) and epimerisation (IAE) analyses were performed in a sector of the Ionian coast of Apulia. Palaeoshoreline 1 (PS1) was identified at +40 ± 5 m with the associated terraced deposit 1 (TD1). Palaeoshoreline 2 (PS2) was identified at +30 ± 2 m with the associated terraced deposit 2 (TD2), characterised by five sub‐units. The sub‐units that mark the transgression have an age of 127.851 ± 1.47 ky BP (by U‐Th dating) and 128.4 ± 26.2 ky BP (by AAR); one of sub‐units marking the highstand falls within aminozone E (MIS 5.5) based on IAE. Palaeoshoreline 3 (PS3) was identified at +19 ± 2 m with the associated terraced deposit 3 (TD3); they mark the occurrence of a second, lower elevation MIS 5.5 highstand. TD3 dates back to aminozones E–D (MIS 5.5‐MIS 5.3) based on IAE and to 122.49 ± 1.25 ky BP by U‐Th dating. We considered two scenarios where the first highstand of MIS 5.5 occurred at 125 and 123 ky BP, with a sea level at +7.5 ± 1.5 m; we then calculated the uplift rate of PS2 for both scenarios: it resulted to be 0.18 ± 0.03 mm/year. These uplift rates were used to calculate the position of PS3 at 122.49 ± 1.25 (rounded to ⁓122 ky BP) as well as the position of the layer dated to 127.851 ± 1.47 ky BP (rounded to ⁓128 ky BP). The position of PS3 at the time of its formation (i.e., the sea level at ⁓122 ky BP, corresponding to the second highstand of MIS 5.5) was calculated to be −2.96 ± 5.42 m for Scenario 1 and −3.32 ± 5.47 m for Scenario 2. The sea level obtained by the layer dated to ~128 ky BP was found to have a value of −11.79 ± 6.29 m. Finally, we reconstructed a relative sea level (RSL) trend suggesting two main highstands during MIS 5.5, with the earlier higher than the second.

Relative sea‐level (RSL) evolution during Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 5 in the Mediterranean basin is still not fully understood despite a plethora of morphological, stratigraphic and geochronological studies carried out on highstand deposits of this area. In this review we assembled a database of 323 U/Th‐dated samples (e.g. corals, molluscs, speleothems) which were used to chronologically constrain RSL evolution within MIS 5. The application of strict geochemical criteria to the U/Th samples indicates that only ~33% of data available for the Mediterranean Sea can be considered ‘reliable’. Most of these data (~65%) refer to the MIS 5e highstand, while only ~17% could be related to the MIS 5a. No attribution to MIS 5c can be unequivocally supported. Nevertheless, the resulting framework does not allow us to define a satisfactory RSL trend during the MIS 5e highstand and subsequent MIS 5 substages. Overall, the proposed selection of reliable/unreliable data would be useful for detecting areas where MIS 5 substage attributions are not supported by confident U/Th chronological data and thus the related reconstructions need to be revised. In this regard, the resulting framework calls for a reappraisal and re‐examination of the Mediterranean records with advanced geochronological methodologies.
