Reconstruction of the Functional Ecosystem in the High Light, Low Temperature Union Glacier Region, Antarctica

Abstract: Antarctica is covered by multiple larger glaciers with diverse extreme conditions. Microorganisms in Antarctic regions are primarily responsible for diverse biogeochemical processes. The identity and functionality of microorganisms from polar glaciers are defined. However, little is known about microbial communities from the high elevation glaciers. The Union Glacier, located in the inland of West Antarctica at 79°S, is a challenging environment for life to survive due to the high irradiance and low temperatur… Show more

“…Thus, the genes for cold adaption, antioxidation and adaption to high solar radiation that were found in this study in QL17 T show that this strain has a rich and diverse stress response pathway. Similar observations were made in bacteria from Antarctica [40].…”

“…Proteobacteria comprised the second most abundant phylum in all samples which is a common feature of Antarctic microbial mat environments. Rhodanobacter , a gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium, was identified as the most abundant genus of Proteobacteria, and has been identified previously in many Antarctic environments ( Li et al, 2019 ). No ASVs assigned to archaea are reported in this study.…”

“…7 ). For instance, Cyanobacteria are known nitrogen-fixing bacteria 70 , however, they have only norB genes, which is required for nitric oxide reduction during denitrification. The lack of nitrogenase sequences could be the lack of more sampling of deeper anoxic sediments.…”
