Reconstruction of the Burned Hand

Abstract: This article summarizes the initial management of acute burn injuries to the hand, in addition to treatment and reconstructive options. The goal of treatment for a burn injury to the hand is primarily a functional hand. This is best achieved by appropriate early treatment, the right selection from a wide range of possible reconstructive procedures, and focused occupational hand therapy.

“…A disadvantage of our algorithm is the long mean hospital stay despite the successful conservative treatment of most of the burn injuries. The consistent treatment can prevent or lessen many of the deformities that occur following a hand burn injury and a successful outcome requires the interdisciplinary involvement and cooperation of the reconstructive and pediatric surgeons, hand therapist, burn team, patient and their parents [10].…”

“…Corrective surgery is based on Z-plasty and various modifications of Z-plasty (double-opposing, four-flap, five-flap [V-M], and VYZZ plasty) are performed (Figs. 9, 10) [14]. However, since Z-plasty cannot sufficiently compensate for insufficient skin in many cases, a full-thickness skin graft is often required simultaneously, and flap surgery is required when important structures are exposed [15,16] (Fig.…”
