Reconstruction of recycling flux from synthetic camera images, evaluated for the Wendelstein 7-X startup limiter

Abstract: Abstract. The interpretation of spectroscopic measurements in the edge region of high-temperature plasmas can be guided by modeling with the EMC3-EIRENE code. A versatile synthetic diagnostic module, initially developed for the generation of synthetic camera images, has been extended for the evaluation of the inverse problem in which the observable photon flux is related back to the originating particle flux (recycling). An application of this synthetic diagnostic to the startup phase (inboard) limiter in Wend… Show more

“…As confirmed there, the consideration of several relevant emission channels, in particular those from dissociation of ionized H 2 molecules, can be important. A recent application of this tool particularly for W7-X conditions, again for side-on integrated line intensities of hydrogen line emission, is carried out in [26,27], and again with similar conclusions.…”

“…The inversion problem is further complicated by the line-of-sight integration in space, as discussed in [26,27] for hydrogen. We revisit the non-local effects on side-on-integration in section 4, arguing that they are even more severe for the (commonly used in He BES) line intensity ratios.…”

“…This post-processing program based on EMC3-EIRENE simulations has been validated against spectral measurements of impurity emission in LHD (Dai et al 2016a(Dai et al ,b, 2018Kawamura et al 2018;Oishi et al 2018). In addition, 3-D reconstruction of the spectroscopic measurements of the H α and CIII emissions on Wendelstein 7-X has been performed as well based on the EMC3-EIRENE modelling (Frerichs et al 2016b(Frerichs et al , 2017.…”

“…Use of a synthetic diagnostic to interpret the EMC3-EIRENE results could be used to test this. Efforts are underway to couple the EMC3-EIRENE code to the CHERAB code [21] for the development of a synthetic diagnostic for the MAST CIS system that will expand on existing EMC3-EIRENE synthetic diagnostic development [22]. We have also not yet addressed the role of bulk flows (without the neutral puffing perturbation) in either the experiment or the simulation and this could be a key component to the asymmetries that are observed.…”
