Reconstruction of monthly NAO and EU indices back to AD 1675

Abstract: Abstract. Instrumental station pressure, temperature and precipitation measurements and proxy data were used to statistically reconstruct monthly time series of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Eurasian (EU) circulation indices back to 1675. Systematic testing of the reconstruction procedure indicated generally reliable reconstructions throughout the entire period, except for summertime before about 1750. Predictive skill varied for different sub-periods depending on data availability. It was highe… Show more

“…Different approaches to a NAOI reconstruction have been established (Cook et al 1998Appenzeller et al 1998;Luterbacher et al 1999;LUT;Garcia et al 2000;Cullen et al 2000;Proctor et al 2000;Glueck and Stockton 2001;Rodrigo et al 2001;Vinther et al 2003). However, Schmutz et al (2000) raised some doubts about the reliability of many of the reconstructions that were based on natural proxies.…”

“…All of these reconstructions have in common the unfiltered time series that have been used to calibrate and validate their statistical transfer models and to reconstruct the NAO signal from the proxies. These models provide ''best'' estimates for individual annual (winter) or even monthly index values (Luterbacher et al 1999;LUT). The spectral characteristics of the reconstructed time series are estimated after the reconstruction procedure.…”

“…Plains and steppe vegetation occupy the north, where temperate air masses originate from eastern Europe. The North Atlantic Oscillation [Cullen and deMenocal, 2000] and East AtlanticWestern Russia teleconnection pattern [Barnston and Livezey, 1987;Luterbacher et al, 1999] are known to impact climate in this general region. Occurrence of frequent drought in Ukraine may involve intrusion of cold air masses from the north or west and formation of large anticyclones behind these fronts, which can create dry, hot conditions (P. Kovalenko et al, unpublished report, available at http://iranrivers.com/electronic_library/paper/ drought/50DOC.pdf).…”

We therefore first explore the relationship between the NAO and sea level in instrumental records, and then test the hypothesis that the periods of rapid sea-level rise in our Icelandic salt-marsh proxy record are synchronous with reconstructed changes in NAO.…”
