Reconstruction of mandibular defects using the scapular tip free flap

Abstract: Low morbidity, early ambulation time, possibility of simultaneous harvesting with the tumor resection, large musculocutaneous paddles in the chimeric version of the flap are advantages of the STFF and makes it a good choice in elderly patients, when other bone containing free flaps are not indicated because of the related morbidity, when other flaps are not available or when wide composite defects are approached.

“…The flaps were harvested using the surgical technique well described in international literature. 5 The thoracodorsal nerve was spared in all patients, except those who underwent harvesting of a latissimus dorsi paddle. In these cases, the nerve was sectioned at the entrance in the muscle and sutured at the remnant of the latissimusdorsi muscle during donor site closure.…”

“…The osteocutaneous fibula provides bicortical bone, which can be arranged in a double barrel configuration to improve bone volume, and has similar soft tissue, albeit with reduced mobility compared to the OC‐RFFF. The scapula tip has emerged as a good option on account of a long pedicle, good bone volume, several soft tissue options and low donor site morbidity (Bianchi et al, ; Brown & Shaw, ; Ferrari et al, ). Unfortunately, QOL data is not available for these techniques for midface reconstruction.…”

“…Вскоре хирурги стали широко использовать данный лоскут для устра-нения мягкотканных дефектов головы, шеи и полости рта. После включения в состав лоскута сегмента луче-вой кости он приобрел кожно-костную структуру, под-ходящую для реконструкции дефектов нижней че-люсти [17].…”
