Construction sector is one of the largest markets for fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) globally. FRP composites are used in a wide range of applications in construction ranging from rehabilitation of existing structures to the full-scale use for new projects because of the benefits they provide over conventional building materials. Such advantages include but not limited to lightness, high mechanical performance and possibility of production in any shape, ease of installation and lesser requirement for supporting structure, controlled anisotropy, high specific strength and specific stiffness. All these multifarious features of FRPs are knocking the doors for new avenues of myriad applications in the Construction Industry, but unfortunately polymeric composites are susceptible to heat and moisture when operating in changing environmental conditions dispelling the biggest myth of them being invincible. The heat response of FRPs is also a major issue of importance in dictating the fate of FRPs future acceptability and applicability. This paper thus attempts to review the specific areas of the current utilization trend of FRPs in the Construction Industry and draw their advantages to support the future applications in a variety of construction processes. It is also being attempted to juxtapose the applicability and the durability concerns of FRPs in a single literature for assessing the versatility and scope of FRPs, by shedding light on the past available studies on the related matter.

This paper investigates the buckling properties of a new building sandwich composite panel composed of two fiberreinforced calcium silicate faces and a formed polyurethane core material. In order to predict the global buckling load of sandwich panels subjected to axial loads, the buckling formulae are theoretically derived and suggested in design. Using the method of effective length factor, both buckling formulae for fixed-fixed sandwich panel and hinged-hinged one are unified into the same form. The buckling formulae are verified by axial load tests, finite element (FE) software ABAQUS. Comparing the theoretical formula derived with FE modeling results, a good agreement is obtained and this illustrates the accuracy of the unified formula. To analyze the influence of both geometrical and material parameters on the buckling load, a sensitivity analysis is conducted. The results show that boundary condition, length, and total thickness have large influence on buckling load. The core shear modulus has large influence on buckling load of short sandwich panels and this influence becomes less important with the increasing length. The accuracy degree of theoretical result in hinged condition is mainly affected by length and initial geometric imperfection. The variation of core shear modulus has little effect on error.

This paper presents the simultaneous effect of alkali activator and water/slag cement ratios on composites properties by full replacement of Portland cement at different ages under steam curing condition. Twelve mortar composites divided into four different groups were prepared using municipal slag cement and alkali activator of sodium meta-silicate by varying the ratios of alkali activator/slag cement and water/slag cement. The results revealed that the addition of municipal slag cement by full replacement of Portland cement was largely worthwhile for slag mortar composites under steam curing condition. The preparation of the mortars by taking various ratios of alkali activator/slag cement and water/slag cement contributed significantly in improving the compressive strength with an acceptable drying shrinkage to slag composites. Scanning electron microscopic technique was used to analyze the microstructure of slag composites at different ages. The ACI 209 and EC 2 design equations were used to predict the compressive strength.
