Reconstruction and rehabilitation of short-range gunshot injury to lower part of face: A systematic approach of three cases

Abstract: Gunshot injuries are always known to cause severe morbidity and mortality when head and neck are involved. They vary in morbidity, which can occur in civilian surroundings. The wound largely depends on the type of weapon, mass and velocity of the bullet, and the distance from where it has been shot. Close-range gunshot wounds in the head and neck region can result in devastating aesthetic and functional impairment. The complexity in facial skeletal anatomy cause multiple medical and surgical challenges to an o… Show more

“…Las lesiones faciales más complejas, con pérdidas de sustancia y fracturas graves asociadas con control de la hemorragia, en ocasiones, requieren una estabilización hemodinámica antes de realizar el tratamiento quirúrgico. Estas pueden esperar un máximo de 24 h para ser suturadas sin compromiso del resultado final 4 .…”

Ballistic injuries (gunshots) form a severe type of traumatic maxillofacial injury [11,12] and can be classified in between the etiologic factors of TDIs. TDI studies most often cover children and adolescents.…”

“…Head and neck regions are relatively common areas for Firearm Projectile (PAF) injuries, which are known for generating severe morbidity and mortality, whether due to homicides, suicides or bodily injuries [1][2][3][4]. And, in addition to representing an important public health problem related to the significant morbidity and mortality rate and excessive expenditures for society, they also represent serious challenges for oral-maxillofacial surgeons, given the significant loss of bone tissue and soft tissue, which severity is not always apparent in the initial presentation.…”
