In recent years, a growing number of studies have presented—in one way or another—various psychotherapeutic projections of a set of spiritual practices of early Christian monasticism. In an attempt to establish a dialogue between the doctrines of Late Antiquity and contemporary psychotherapy, it could be risky to extrapolate anachronistic terms, questions and discussions that are foreign to the original context of the Early Church Fathers. In order to overcome this difficulty, we will try to elucidate Evagrius Ponticus’ model of psychospiritual integration through his particular understanding of the effective relations between grace and nature. This will possibly allow us to translate and understand the current interest in his psycho-spiritual model in the same terms as those in which it was formulated by Evagrius. In his effort to think about how the process of complete healing of man takes place, Evagrius takes up intuitions and ideas from the Hippocratic and Platonic traditions. These traditions disapprove of magic as an act of impiety towards the divine order inscribed in the θύσις. Evagrius follows this fundamental intuition of rejection of magic and sorcery to integrate it into a new Christian synthesis that strives to move away from a magical understanding of the action of grace. Now, as Evagrius moves away from a magical conception of grace, certain theoretical-practical knowledge related to mental and spiritual health can be found in his writings. Evagrius is particularly interested in specifying how grace operates in the cognitive-emotional dynamics that intervene in the healing processes of the soul without contradicting or magically suspending the immanent laws of the θύσις.

El presente estudio procura examinar un aspecto del tópico general “Enfermedad y terapéutica del alma” en el pensador del Ponto. El aspecto que –en el marco de dicho tópico– nos interesa abordar aquí es el referente al reconocimiento evagriano de la capacidad confutatoria de la palabra como recurso terapéutico frente a la enfermedad del alma. La palabra tiene, para nuestro autor, una potencialidad terapéutica que puede ser actualizada por el llamado “gnóstico”. Éste, que conoce por experiencia el desorden de los pensamientos y pasiones inherente al alma caída, puede y debe aportar una palabra que cura al desenmascarar y desarticular el núcleo pasional subyacente. El gnóstico es, además, un puente entre el alma enferma y la Palabra sagrada permitiendo que aquélla se vea en ésta configurando –bajo su influjo– su mundo cognitivo y afectivo.

Tradução do texto Sobre as oposições de virtudes e vícios de Evágrio Pôntico com uma breve introdução. Trata-se, muito provavelmente, de um opúsculo que acompanhava o texto maior A Eulogio, sendo este uma apresentação de elementos básicos da vida monástica, por isso chamado de O Segundo discurso a Eulogio. Sobre as oposições de virtudes e vícios apresenta em forma condensada o texto A Eulogio, descrevendo sinteticamente a doutrina básica das divisões (em oito ou nove) dos demônios que fazem batalha aos humanos, mas em especial aos monges do deserto. As oposições são uma descrição poético-definidora, na forma literária das hóroi kai epigráphai (definições e inscrições) dos demônios/paixões e suas virtudes opostas: gula e continência; luxúria e temperança; avareza e pobreza; tristeza e contentamento; ira e paciência; acídia e perseverança; vaidade e ausência de vaidade; inveja e falta de inveja; orgulho e humildade. Estas definições (por volta de quinze para cada um dos vícios e cada uma das virtudes) são compostas, em sua maioria, de dois termos relacionados, em que um qualifica o outro, de forma por vezes metafórica, indicando um sistema complexo e muito bem articulado. O texto em grego que aqui se reproduz foi estabelecido por Fogielman (2017).
