Reconsidering Private Higher Education in Brazil

Abstract

<jats:p>This article discusses the role of the for-profit private sector in the Brazilian Higher Education System. Emphasizing its hegemony, we consider that the adoption of mercantilist logic has implications for the quality of supply and is leading the sector to be characterized as an oligopoly. Although the National Education Plan predicts an increase in public sector enrollment as massification continues, current economic and political conditions may prevent this expansion, leaving the country in a very delicate situation.</jats:p>
