Reconfigurable wideband metamaterial absorber with wide angle and polarisation stability

Abstract: A reconfigurable wideband metamaterial absorber based on lumped components is proposed. The wideband can be tuned with a −10 dB bandwidth of about 1.5 GHz by selecting certain values of the resistors and the inductors. The simulated results demonstrate that the designed absorber has good performance regarding polarisation insensitiveness and wide angles of incident waves for both TE and TM polarisations. The waveguide measurement method is used to verify the simulated result of the wideband metamaterial absorb… Show more

“…9. The waveguide measurement method [13,14] was used to test the absorption performance for its simplicity in measurement process. The proposed structure shows single absorption peak at 12.46 GHz for the lower height of 3.5 mm with double absorption peaks at 11.22 GHz and 15.54 GHz for higher gap of 7.5 mm.…”

“…14, ensuring that the absorption rate of the proposed wide angle MMA is independent of polarization angle variation. The 0° incidence angle of TE mode excited incoming wave in waveguide method [14] has caused approximately 0.03 GHz-0.04 GHz shift in absorption frequency. This frequency shift is also aided by the fabrication mismatch tolerance and material parameter changes.…”

“…Metamaterials (MTMs) are artificial materials whose electric and magnetic responses can be altered according to the required application to exhibit exotic properties not usually available in nature [1], [2]. Among several MTM based RF component applications like antennas [3][4][5], filters [6], [7] and high frequency photodiode bias Tee circuits [8], metamaterial absorbers (MMA) [9] are extensively proposed and investigated due to the various properties exhibited in the form of multi-band [10], polarization independence [11], compact [12], broad-band [13], [14], and wide-oblique angle [15], [16]. These exotic character-istics of MMAs are achieved merely by altering the geometrical parameters of the sub-wavelength unit cells which are usually arranged in a periodic manner.…”

“…Sample-1 corresponds to the actual sample without any orientation whereas Sample-2 corresponds to the samples with 30 • inclination angle with respect to the Sample-1. These samples are tested using waveguide measurement technique [37][38][39] instead of free-space measurement system [13][14][15]. As the latter technique requires sample size in the order of 10λ, which results in comparatively large size samples of proposed absorber to be tested.…”
